On March 11, 2011, in Harlingen, Texas, Ernesto Alonso Garcia stabbed two men. Ivan Rodriguez died as a result of his injuries. Murder and aggravated assault warrants were issued by the Harlingen Police Department for the stabbing incident.

Garcia has an extensive criminal history. In 2002, he was convicted of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and sentenced to 7 years in Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) prison. In February 2011, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) issued a warrant for his arrest for Marijuana Trafficking.
