Vital Statistics

Circumstances of Offense:

On February 7, 2013, at approximately 11:30 PM, Destiny Pittman was fatally shot during a home invasion at her residence on James Drive in Kokomo, Indiana. The 21-year-old was at home with her boyfriend, a female roommate, and the roommate's two children when intruders forcibly entered the home by kicking in the door. Upon hearing the commotion, Pittman stepped into the hallway to confront the intruders while her boyfriend and roommate took cover. She was shot once in the chest with a .40 caliber weapon and died at the scene. The other occupants of the home survived unharmed but could only provide limited information to investigators, having seen only shadows and a single shoe belonging to one of the suspects. Investigators believed the home invasion was drug-related, as Pittman and her boyfriend were allegedly involved in selling marijuana. The intruders were believed to have been searching for drugs and money. According to testimony that emerged years later, the suspects fled with a bag of marijuana and cash. The case went cold for nearly ten years due to lack of physical evidence and witness cooperation. In December 2022, a woman came forward claiming she had accompanied two brothers to the home that night. This led to the March 2023 arrests of Jesse and Joey McCartney on charges of murder, robbery, and burglary. However, Jesse McCartney was acquitted in August 2023, and charges against Joey McCartney were dismissed in December 2023. No one has been convicted in connection with Destiny Pittman's death, and the case remains open.
