Circumstances of Recovery:
A commercial fishing vessel found an unidentified man's body approximately one mile off Newport Beach on December 24, 2013. The coroner's older listing says the classification was pending; a November 2022 sheriff's release describes the case as a homicide investigation. He was estimated to be 30-60 years old. The agency describes him as Asian, possibly Chinese. He had black hair and wore a Timex Ironman watch. Investigators revisited the case in October 2021 and submitted bone-derived DNA for a genetic profile. The resulting information suggested primarily Chinese ancestry. In November 2022 the sheriff released a revised rendering by forensic artist Carl Koppelman. The Orange County Sheriff's Department, Coroner Division, maintains this identification case under file 13-05096-MR. Anyone with identifying information can contact the Coroner Division at 714-647-7400 and quote that file number.
