Vital Statistics

Circumstances of Offense:

On the afternoon of Thursday, September 15, 2005, Anne Marie Foy was discovered dead in a wooded area off Crown Street in Liverpool's red light district. The undergrowth was a commonly used location by local sex workers. A member of the public found her partially clothed. A post-mortem examination revealed she had sustained 62 injuries on her body, with 21 to her head. She was believed to have been killed at approximately 5:30 a.m. that morning. Evidence suggested she had been throttled with a tree branch found nearby with blood on it. She had no defensive wounds. The cause of death was determined to be beating and strangulation.

Additional Details:

Anne Marie had worked as a sex worker for approximately 20 years and had battled heroin addiction for most of her life. She lived in the Kensington area of Liverpool. During court proceedings, it was noted that she had gained a reputation as someone who would sometimes try to steal from clients. The police believed she knew her killer. Kevin Kilshaw walked into a police station in 2007 and confessed to the murder, but weeks before his trial was due to begin, it was revealed he had been in a London hostel at the time of the murder, eliminating him as a suspect. In April 2010, Stephen Mawhinney, living in Plymouth, was arrested by detectives and questioned about the murder but was later released. Despite several arrests over the years, nobody has been charged with the killing. Anne Marie's family members, including her daughter Carly Wall, expressed ongoing hope for justice. Detective Superintendent Ian Kemble stated that the murder investigation remained active. The case remains unsolved.
