At the time, she was living in an apartment with her boyfriend, who was away on army orders. Her boyfriend was out of town on May 21, 2017, on military orders. 20-year-old Pam was home alone when some of his relatives arrived at their apartment. Pam quickly called her boyfriend because she was frightened & did not want to allow them into the apartment, but when they claimed they only wanted to pick up their belongings & go, her boyfriend told her to let them in. Once Pam allowed the relatives inside, they began to physically assault her. Pam got free & locked herself in a bedroom and texted her aunt to pick her up. A neighbor heard the fighting and came over, asking Pam if she was ok. Pam also asked the neighbor to call the police. When the Houston Police Department arrived, no one answered the door. So they left. When her aunt finally arrived at her apartment, one of her boyfriend's family members stepped outside and told her Pam was not home refusing the aunt entry to look around. Her cell phone, keys, clothes, and personal belongings were still left behind. After several days with no sign of her or any communication, Shapammala was reported missing.

The family launched their own search efforts, teaming up with Texas EquuSearch, but they have found no trace of Buckner. They claim investigators at the Houston Police Department are not returning their calls. Shapammala's boyfriend was confirmed to have been on base that night, far from their Houston apartment. According to her family as per this interview, her case is now updated to a homicide. Her family wants to make sure she isn't forgotten eight years later. Her family is still searching for answers 8 years later. Her family continues to hold onto hope, but they say they are not receiving the help they need from authorities.

Neighbors later told police they heard a disturbance in her apartment the night before she vanished. One neighbor texted her to check on her, and Pam replied that she wasn't okay and needed help.
