Summary:

28 year old Maxine Chiara Bieberbach, aka Maxine Chiara Chaires, has been missing since March 6, 2018. She struggled with addiction and had been part of the City of Cordova Police Chief Nick Smith’s (now Walker County Sheriff Smith) Mercy Project. She’d told her family she was checking into rehab and she wouldn’t be able to contact them for a while. They patiently waited to hear from her but never did. They started to worry and began to call rehabs and check with friends but couldn’t find her.

Vital Statistics

Circumstances of Disappearance:

Maxine's family's initial attempts to file a missing persons report were unsuccessful and the formal report wasn’t taken by law enforcement until May 2018. Despite only having minor misdemeanor charges related to her addiction, Maxine had spent a year incarcerated in the city jail in Cordova, a tiny city in Walker County, AL. Once released from the jail, she was forced into work release. Instead of going to rehab as she had told her family, she fled work release and was hiding out with friends on the east side of Walker County. Maxine was last reported to be seen by a friend who claimed that when a deputy from another county who was in the area looking for stolen property in the general area pulled into the driveway where they were, Maxine ran into the woods behind the home which was located off Empire Rd in Empire/Sumiton, AL but we do not believe this is the last time she was seen.

Additional Details:

Some digital forensic evidence was sent to a crime lab in another county by the prior sheriff's administration. The current sheriff requested that evidence from the crime lab and the crime lab claimed it had been mailed to them several times however, the sheriff's office was adamant they never received it. The employee at the crime lab that had processed the evidence left for another job and the crime lab stated they no longer had the information to recreate the evidence to provide.
