On August 15, 2019, at approximately 9:40 p.m., Jake Robert Hall was shot multiple times while standing on the sidewalk outside his apartment complex at 17th Avenue North and 2nd Street North in Jacksonville Beach, Florida. Neighbors reported hearing six gunshots. Hall was found dead in the roadway before 11 p.m. Three responding officers performed CPR on Hall, but he could not be revived by the time fire rescue arrived.

Hall was shot five times, with several shots at close range. Detective Sergeant David Young indicated the pattern of shooting suggested the crime was personal in nature rather than random. Police investigated Hall's recent activities and acquaintances, pulling cell phone records and surveillance footage. DNA and shell casings were sent for testing. A reward was initially offered, increased to $5,000 by August 2025. Despite ongoing investigation, tips remained few and far between. Hall's parents spent the day after the shooting at the Jacksonville Beach Police Department. His ex-wife Robin Rodenbaugh and the mother of his youngest child cooperated with investigators. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office included the case in its Cold Case Spotlight campaign beginning March 2023.
