Vital Statistics

Circumstances of Disappearance:

Mr Jónsson, who worked as a taxi driver, arrived in Ireland on February 8th, 2019, and booked into the Bonnington Hotel in Whitehall, about 3km from where gardaí are searching. On 9 February 2019, Jón Jónsson was seen exiting the Bonnington Hotel in Dublin by his fiancée Kristiana Guðjónsdóttir. The couple were in Dublin to attend the Dublin Poker Festival and take a short break. That was the last time anyone would see or hear from him. He left his clothes, passport, wallet and phone in his hotel room. CCTV footage later recorded him walking past the entrance to Highfield Hospital and heading towards the Collins Avenue junction. He has not been seen or heard from since.

Additional Details:

Gardaí have investigated 270 lines of inquiry to no avail. The family hired a private investigator with a history of tracking missing persons, although it is understood he is no longer involved in the case. Icelandic police have visited Ireland at least once to assist in the investigation and the case is discussed whenever Irish and Icelandic government officials meet. In early 2025, there was a joint RTÉ (Ireland) and RÚV (Iceland) six-part true crime series. The series was done over 18 months. Gardaí got Europol involved in March 2025. Gardaí investigating the disappearance of Icelandic man Jón Jónsson in Dublin have enlisted the help of Europol, the EU law enforcement agency. Investigators intend to use the agency to help co-ordinate with Icelandic police and chase down new leads, including tip-offs that Mr Jónsson may have been murdered by a hitman in a case of mistaken identity. An Garda Síochána has identified a veteran criminal based in the UK as a person of interest in the investigation. The suspect, who is from Liverpool, has a history of robbery, domestic violence and large-scale drug dealing. Gardaí are co-operating with Merseyside Police in the UK, through Europol, in an effort to speak to the 60-year-old man. Gardaí investigating the disappearance have carried out four new searches with the help of cadaver dogs. The searches were carried out at several locations in north Dublin after a number of people provided information following the airing of an RTÉ documentary podcast series on Mr Jónsson's disappearance. Beyond CCTV images gardaí had no information about where he went and no trace of him has ever been uncovered. He had never been to Ireland before, had no friends or family here and had never gone missing before.
