Vital Statistics

Circumstances of Disappearance:

Betty Jane Lobush, 83, was last known to be living with caregivers in the 6000 block of Siskiyou Avenue in Grenada, a small community in Siskiyou County, California. She was last seen in May 2019; the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office records her last known contact as May 1, 2019. She was not reported missing until July 2019, when a relative told the Sheriff's Office that she had not been seen since May. The Sheriff's Office Major Crimes Unit opened an investigation. When detectives questioned the caregivers, they gave various accounts of her whereabouts, and at least one person said Ms. Lobush had traveled to Oregon and passed away while on the trip. Detectives could not confirm any trip to Oregon, and a check of coroner and death records in both Oregon and California found no record that she had died in either state. Ms. Lobush has medical challenges, and the Sheriff's Office has said the circumstances of her disappearance are highly suspicious, leading detectives to classify her as an endangered missing person. She was entered in national and state crime information systems, including the National Crime Information Center, but no reports of her whereabouts were received. On May 28 and 29, 2020, roughly a year after she was last seen, the Sheriff's Office issued a public appeal for information. Spokesman Jon Lopey said statements investigators had been given "didn't materialize," that detectives were now treating the case as a possible crime, and that they had obtained search warrants for records from the Social Security Administration, California's CalWORKs program and the Veterans Administration to determine whether benefits were still being paid in her name. Lopey said investigators hoped she was safe with family or friends, but that someone likely knew what had happened to her. Ms. Lobush is a white woman about 5 feet 5 inches tall and 130 pounds, with gray hair and brown eyes. No arrests have been announced and she has not been found. Her case remains open with the Sheriff's Office Major Crimes Unit.

Additional Details:

Anyone with information about Ms. Lobush's whereabouts is urged to contact Detective Jeff Moser of the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office Major Crimes Unit at (530) 842-8361, or the Sheriff's 24-hour dispatch center at (530) 841-2900. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office, 305 Butte Street, Yreka, CA 96097: 24-hour dispatch (530) 841-2900, headquarters (530) 842-8300. The Sheriff's Office lists this case on its Unsolved Siskiyou website, launched February 5, 2025, which asks the public to share any information, however small.
