Johnson last spoke to her thirteen-year-old daughter in December 2019. She was arrested in Waynesboro, MS on January 13 at 11:51 pm by the Mississippi State Police, who then transferred custody to the Wayne County Jail. She was released from custody on Tuesday, January 14, 2020, at 8:03 AM. April's arrest was for Disturbance of the Peace, and she was released by signing her own bond. There is no video evidence of her leaving the jail, as the cameras were out of service on that date. When she got out of jail it was a cold day and she was released barefoot and in a ripped up shirt that is clear in her mugshots from that jail stay. Someone saw her walking about a half mile from a tire shop in Butler, AL on January 15th and she was barefoot.

Her family reported her missing to the Jackson, Alabama police department in July. Six months after her last sighting, the family filed a missing persons report on July 16, 2020, with the Jackson Police Department in Jackson, AL. The Jackson Police Department passed information on to the Waynesboro Police Department after the report was filed. April had mental issues that were known by her family. In June 2020 Aprils step aunt went to a small police station in Jackson Alabama 120 miles from where she disappeared and put out an APB on her that was never followed up with. April's husband (Bruce Wayne Jacob's) vanished 6 months later in Oklahoma and is still a cold case missing person as well. Missing Person / NamUs #MP71621.
