Summary:
Hugo Garcia, 30, a landlord and third-floor resident of a building in the 2300 block of Meade Avenue, shot 33-year-old Fernando Deleon 10 times Saturday night on May 30, 2020 in Chicago's Belmont Cragin neighborhood. Garcia went to police earlier Saturday to report death threats from Deleon via phone calls and text messages, but then returned to his building. Less than two months later, the landlord posted bond set at $1 million by posting the $100,000 needed for bail and hasn't been seen since.
Vital Statistics
Circumstances of Offense:
Deleon rented the first-floor apartment from Garcia, who said he had been receiving death threats via phone calls and text messages from Deleon. Garcia went to police earlier Saturday to report the threats, but then returned to his building and began yelling for Deleon to come out of his room. After an argument in the building's stairwell, Garcia allegedly shot Deleon in his leg and side. Deleon fell backwards into his apartment, but Garcia followed him and unloaded the rest of his handgun's clip into Deleon. Garcia then re-loaded the gun and fired the remaining bullets at Deleon. Multiple residents in the building witnessed the argument between the two men and the subsequent shooting.
Additional Details:
Garcia is a lifelong Cook County resident and Marine Corps veteran who has been working as a pipe fitter and has no prior criminal history. An arrest warrant was issued for Garcia on August 24th of 2020. The detective assigned to the victim's mother's case retired in November of 2020. Chicago police said the case is listed as cleared and closed by an arrest and police confirm there is an active bond forfeiture warrant issued for Garcia. As of October 2026, social media postings unfortunately confirm that Garcia is still at large. Also I am only mentioning the death threats that DeLeon allegedly sent Garcia to report on the facts of this case. This is not being done to criticize DeLeon or make it appear that he is responsible for being brutally murdered. Please consider sharing this case so that Fernando DeLeon’s family can get justice and answers.
