Circumstances of Death:

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to reports of a toddler being found in a ditch on Traphill Road at Jettie Joines Ave near One Mile Road on Thursday around 8:53 p.m. The initial investigation indicates it was believed the 2-year-old child wandered away from his home down a steep driveway into the roadway, and may have been accidentaly hit by a motorist. Officials say the child had been left at home with two other children for a short time as a parent went to a neighboring house. Stamey had just learned how to unlock doors and wandered down the gravel driveway and onto the winding road. The child was initially taken by a family member to the Mountain View Fire Department but was pronounced dead at Wilkes Medical Center a short time later. Investigators determined that his injuries were not consistent with those of similar accidents at the posted speed limit of 55MPH. But the public has not been made aware of this, this information was released on a search warrant for a property on Jettie Joines Ave.

Additional Details:

It's been more than five years since 2-year-old Atticus Stamey died. With no arrest in connection to the child's death, his mother, Nicole Chivers, is speaking on camera for the first time. All leads so far have proven fruitless, including reported descriptions of the vehicle that struck the child. The Wilkes Crime Stoppers board recently agreed to seek renewed public awareness of the death of 2-year-old Atticus Stamey of Hays in 2020. The objective of the renewed effort is to prompt people to share what they know that could help solve the case. While this case is still considered open, authorities urge the community to come forward with anything they know involving this case. This family deserves closure, and the only way justice can be served is for information to come forward, since the investigators wont actually do their job.
