Vital Statistics
Circumstances of Offense:
Dylan spent September 19, 2021 at a Bishop's Castle vs Knighton rugby match during the day, then visited several pubs in town before attending two house parties. He left the second party at friends Will and Tom Gee's home at approximately 2:30am to 3:00am to walk home. He was last seen at 2:30am crossing the road as he began his walk home along the B4385 Brampton Road. At approximately 4:10am, a milk worker named Valerie Knowles drove along the road and saw white trainers and a bag in the roadway but did not stop. At 5:05am, George Rowson, driving to a farm for work, discovered Dylan's body in the road and called emergency services. Paramedics arrived at the scene but Dylan was pronounced dead at 5:33am. A post-mortem examination determined he died from head injuries consistent with being struck and run over by a vehicle. Home Office pathologist Dr Alexander Kolar stated the injuries were consistent with Dylan being recumbent (lying down) on the road at the time of collision, not upright. Death would have been very quick.
Additional Details:
The inquest opened on September 30, 2021, with coroner John Ellery adjourning proceedings until February 8, 2022. In May 2022, the coroner closed the inquest but assured the family the police inquiry would remain open. A 42-year-old man from Bishop's Castle was arrested in October 2021 on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving but was released with no further action after police determined he was not involved. A man in his 50s was arrested in September 2022 on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and sending malicious communications, and was released on bail. In May 2024, a separate individual, David Brown (aged 61), pleaded guilty to two counts of sending false information to the family under the Malicious Communications Act after sending distressing messages claiming responsibility for Dylan's death. The family set up a memorial garden at Bishop's Castle Rugby Club and established the Dylan Price Memorial Fund to provide sporting opportunities for young people. Dylan's funeral was held on October 9, 2021, at St John the Baptist Church with hundreds of community members attending. The funeral was followed by a wake at the rugby club. A GoFundMe campaign raised £18,467 to support the family, with donations going to YoungMinds and Bishop's Castle Community College for counselling services. In February 2022, the family offered a £15,000 reward for information leading to arrest and conviction. Multiple police appeals have been made, with detectives particularly keen to speak with anyone who drove or walked along Brampton Road between 1am and 5:30am on September 19, 2021. Detective Inspector Jo Delahay confirmed police kept an open mind about whether the death could constitute homicide but found no reports of animosity or fights involving Dylan. The inquest heard that forensic evidence showed Dylan had alcohol and drugs in his body. The case remains under investigation.
