According to her boyfriend, he dropped her off at a hotel on U.S. 41 and never heard from her again. She has never been heard from since. It was uncharacteristic of her to not contact her family. Scala was living with her boyfriend but had recently moved out and into a hotel.

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office conducted a thorough missing person investigation from 2012 through October 2017, interviewing dozens of friends, associates, and neighbors and reviewing her phone, bank, and other electronic accounts. In 2017, the CUE Center for Missing Persons profiled her case, but no solid leads emerged. In 2018, detectives received a tip from someone known to Scala suggesting she may have been the victim of a homicide and that her remains were buried at a property in the 3900 block of Vana Drive, where Scala had lived with her boyfriend at the time of her disappearance. Police excavated the property for two days but found no evidence. As of June 2021, the case remained assigned to a detective and was being actively worked, though no updates were available at that time. Her mother, Lynn Leviscala, has maintained hope and continued searching for answers, distributing fliers throughout Sarasota.
