Lazaro Robles Becerra, a 49-year-old Columbus man, was driving a pickup truck when he struck and killed 4-year-old Catherine Rodriguez while she was trick-or-treating on Halloween on the Northeast Side, and faces charges of vehicular manslaughter and vehicular homicide. Circumstances of Offense:

On October 31 close to 7 p.m., Columbus police said the pickup truck drove through the intersection of Westerville Road and Valley Park Avenue while the child and a woman were walking through the crosswalk. Becerra seriously injured an adult walking with the girl in the crosswalk, with the injured adult identified as Valeria Saucedo, a 33-year-old single mother of three who was a friend of the Rodriguez family. The child was taken to Nationwide Children's Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 9:30 p.m. The crosswalk lights for pedestrians to cross the intersection were on at the time of the crash. Becerra remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation according to police. By the time charges were filed, he fled and remains at large, according to Columbus’s municipal court records database.

Additional Details:

Columbus City Attorney Zach Klein's office announced charges against 50-year-old Lazaro Robles Becerra in December 2022, and if convicted, he could face up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine. As of October 2023, a year after the incident, there had not been much movement in the case.
