Vital Statistics
Circumstances of Offense:
Detectives released CCTV and bodyworn footage of Mr Schofield on his bike going to a nearby garage about an hour and a half before the assault occurred. Both videos showed what he was wearing at the time of the attack. Matthew Schofield was found dead in Belgrave Road, Leicester, after the assault shortly before 03:00 BST on 11 June. Mr Schofield was found by officers nearly 90 minutes after being attacked and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Police initially said Mr Schofield's death was "unexplained" but later concluded he had been assaulted. Matthew Schofield was found with a head injury on Belgrave Road, Leicester in the early hours of Sunday 11 June.
Additional Details:
His mother Emma Daniels said her son liked "hanging out with his brothers, cousins, friends and his sister". "His life changed when he had his son," she said. "That was the best thing that had ever happened to him. I need to know what happened to him and his son needs to know in the future." Emma Daniels said "nobody stopped to help" her son Matthew Schofield after he was assaulted in Leicester in 2023. Mrs Daniels wants to introduce a law that would mean people have a duty to stop and help someone who appears to be in physical danger, without risking their own safety. She said the proposed bill, which she calls Matthew's Law, would mean people have a legal duty to call for professional help for a person in danger, or face legal implications for ignoring them. The ongoing investigation into the murder of Matthew Schofield more than two years ago has led to a suspect being rearrested for murder. A 23-year-old man who was previously arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender was further arrested on suspicion of murder. He has been released on police bail while enquiries continue. A total of 17 people have been arrested in connection with the investigation. Thirteen people are currently on police bail, one person was released under investigation and three were released with no further action.
