Summary:
Jarrett Brooks, 16, left home on July 4, 2023, after being grounded by his parents. He was seen taking a gun from the family's safe before he left. The parents firmly believe Jarrett was picked up by someone after search dogs lost his scent in a nearby pasture. Authorities are now treating the case as a possible homicide investigation due to the lack of confirmed sightings in over a year.

Circumstances of Disappearance:
The previous day he had been grounded for taking his father's vehicle without permission. At 6:15 a.m., he woke up and approached his mother to confirm he was still grounded, and she said yes. His mother then stepped into the shower and planned to discuss the matter further with him when she got out, but by the time she got out of the shower he was gone. Home security footage showed Jarrett taking a handgun out of his father's safe and tucking it into his waistband before he left the house. He also took a pocket knife but left his wallet, driver's license and cash behind. At 7:00 a.m., a neighbor saw him walking quickly across a pasture on the neighbor's ranch about a mile from Jarrett's home. Ten minutes later when the neighbor tried to approach him at a crossroad, he was gone. He has never been heard from again and his mother filed a missing persons report at 12:30 p.m.
Additional Details:
In January, warrants were served in an effort to find digital evidence that may help the investigation, but no arrests were made. Officials focused on computer forensics evidence and cyber communications that may help the investigation. Dec. 4, marked 17 months since Jarrett Brooks was last seen in the Joseph City area. In these 17 months, Navajo County Sheriff's Office detectives have utilized many resources and followed every lead reported to the office. There is no new information or leads on Jarrett's whereabouts. The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children recently released an age-progression photo of Brooks, showing what he may look like today at 19 years old. Jarrett has six siblings and was the oldest child still living at home, and had been homeschooled with his three younger siblings for the past few years prior to his disappearance. He planned to either work at a ranch or become a firefighter like his father after graduation, and was active in the fire department's explorer program.

Molly Kathryn Ottman, 50, was charged by a Navajo County grand jury May 6 with two felonies – obstructing a criminal investigation, and fraudulent schemes and artifices.
The Navajo County Sheriff's Office announced Jan. 3 that it had carried out multiple search warrants as part of its ongoing investigation into the disappearance of 17-year-old Jarrett Brooks.
