On October 20, 2024, Jesús Muñoz Mata was vacationing in the municipality of Alvarado, Veracruz, Mexico, with two friends. During the trip, he received a phone call and left to meet someone alone. He never returned. His last known communication was a message to his mother in which he said: 'Mom, don't be scared, some state police [ministeriales] stopped me. Do what they say.' He was 35 years old at the time of his disappearance.

Additional Details:

After Jesús's disappearance, his family received ransom demands and paid, but he was never released. By February 2025, all contact from the kidnappers had ceased. In June 2025, his aunt, journalist Gloria Muñoz Ramírez, publicly shared his search file and requested support from communities in Veracruz and Quintana Roo. In February 2026, the family denounced the investigation as negligent, stating the Veracruz Attorney General's Office had failed to adequately pursue the case. The Federal Attorney General's Office (FGR) assumed jurisdiction and opened case file 538/DS/2025. As of February 2026, Jesús Muñoz Mata remains missing.
