Case Disposition:

A civilian witness spotted suspect Luigi Mangione in a McDonalds in Altoona, PA. Law enforcement responded and Mangione provided a false identification which led to his arrest. During his arrest he was found in possession of a 3D printed firearm, silencer and writings about healthcare. On December 9, 2024, Mangione was arrested and charged for the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

Summary:

Mr. Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was walking into a company conference and was unexpectedly shot and killed from behind by an unknown suspect. Mr. Thompson had been walking across the street from his hotel to the conference. The shooting was captured on surveillance video and a manhunt covering multiple states is currently in progress.

Vital Statistics

Circumstances of Offense:

The suspect appeared to have used a pistol equipped with a silencer that malfunctioned on multiple shots and required manual clearing of the fired cartridge casing. Numerous points of surveillance video have been released which detail the suspect fleeing on a commercial bike to the area of Central Park. Items of evidence to include a water bottle and cellphone possibly linked to the shooter have been recovered along with three cartridge casings. Police described the shooter as a white man wearing a black hoodie and black pants with a gray backpack. It’s believed the suspect used a gun with a silencer.

Additional Details:

Authorities have released a picture of who they believe to be the suspect without a face covering. Additionally, they believe he had arrived in New York several days prior after taking a Greyhound bus from Atlanta, GA to NYC. Bullet cartridge casings found at the scene were found with the words "deny", "depose" and "defend" on them, according to two law enforcement officials. Those words may have been a message related to “Delay, Deny, Defend”, the title of a book that discusses how health insurance companies avoid paying patient claims. The book, by Jay M. Feinman, a professor emeritus at Rutgers Law School, was published in 2010.
