Case Disposition:
The body of missing college student Riley Strain was recovered from the Cumberland River in West Nashville on Friday, March 22nd, 2024 - following a two-week search, according to Nashville police. "No foul play-related trauma was observed," police said. There’s no evidence to suggest anything besides Strain accidentally falling in the river, Nashville Police Chief John Drake told reporters on Friday morning. Strain's body was found approximately eight miles from downtown. At this time, police said no foul-play trauma was observed; however, an autopsy in this case is pending.
Summary:
Riley Strain and his fraternity brothers from Mizzou came to Nashville for a fraternity event on March 8th, 2024. They were reportedly staying at the Tempo Hotel downtown. Strain went to Luke’s 32 Bridge on Broadway Friday night with a group of friends, where records show he purchased and was served one alcoholic drink and two waters. He reportedly was headed back to his hotel.
Vital Statistics
Circumstances of Disappearance:
Around 9:30pm, Strain was kicked out of the bar. He was followed down the stairs with one of his friends, according to the bar. However, his friend reportedly did not exit and returned upstairs. Around 9:45 p.m. surveillance video from Downtown Smoke & Vape Shop on Church Street caught Riley stumbling and falling in a parking lot at 3rd Avenue and Church Street. At 9:47 p.m. surveillance video caught Strain crossing 1st Avenue North to Gay Street. Between 9:55 p.m. and 10 p.m. Strain’s last phone ping was near James Robertson Parkway and Gay Street. Detectives said the last phone conversation Strain had with one of his friends was also during that same time period. On Saturday, March 9th (the next day), at 1:46 p.m. Strain’s friend called 911 after saying he went to the Central Police Precinct and called the sheriff’s office to file a missing person’s report.
Additional Details:
Nashville emergency officials have used multiple sonar boats, several canines, the Nashville Fire Department boat and crew, a dive team, drone and operator. Crews used the canines to narrow down an area near the Riverfront Park. They sent a team of divers into the water which has all so far turned up nothing aside from Strain's debit card.
