Officers were called to the 500 block of Howell Avenue in Muskegon Heights at 5:00 a.m. on June 22, 2025. They found JaQuantay Crawford with a gunshot wound to his upper body. Crawford was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. Detectives from the Muskegon Heights Police Department and Michigan State Police Muskegon Major Case Initiative identified Joseph Ramon Jones as a suspect early in the investigation.

The Muskegon County Prosecutor's Office authorized a warrant for Jones' arrest on open murder and two weapons charges. Despite an 11-month joint investigation by the Muskegon Heights Police Department and U.S. Marshals Service, Jones remained at large. The case was not made public until May 2026, more than 11 months after the shooting. According to Michigan Department of Corrections records, Jones previously served multiple prison sentences for drug possession, drug delivery, and resisting police officers. His case file dates back to 1997, with his most recent release from prison in 2023. Police publicly appealed for information regarding Jones' whereabouts in May 2026.
