Summary:

Jang Mi-ran was a 37-year-old woman who disappeared from Hallim-eup in Jeju City on May 12, 2026. Her body was discovered on August 24, 2026, on a palm tree farm after 104 days missing. Police initially suspected suicide by hanging, though family and observers questioned this conclusion due to physical impossibilities and the lengthy delay before her death.

Vital Statistics

Circumstances of Death:

On May 12, 2026, at approximately 10:15 p.m., Jang Mi-ran left her long-term accommodation (pension) in Hallim-eup, Jeju City, alone wearing slippers and carrying only her mobile phone. She was captured on CCTV leaving the property. This was the last confirmed sighting of her alive. Her boyfriend reported her missing at approximately 6:43 p.m. on May 15, three days after she disappeared. However, Deputy Inspector Bu of Jeju Seobu Police Station falsely claimed to have contacted her and closed the case at approximately 9:16 p.m. that same day—approximately 2.5 hours after the missing person report was filed. Bu told the boyfriend that Jang was safe but did not wish to disclose her location. On August 24, 2026, at approximately 10:46 a.m., during a joint search involving over 400 police officers, government personnel, soldiers and civilians, Jang's body was discovered at a palm tree farm in Hallim-eup, approximately 1 kilometer from her last known location. The remains were severely decomposed. Identity was confirmed through dental examination on August 25, 2026.

Additional Details:

A National Forensic Service analysis revealed a fracture on Jang's hyoid bone, which is typical of death by hanging. However, police investigation and forensic evidence indicated Jang likely died just a few hours after disappearing, in the early morning hours of May 13, 2026. The preliminary police assessment that she died by hanging drew significant public skepticism. Local residents questioned whether a woman of Jang's stature (157-158 centimeters tall) could have physically reached and tied a rope on the palm tree where her body was found, particularly noting the tree's characteristics and minimal branches. Deputy Inspector Bu was arrested and faced charges including dereliction of duty, falsification and use of falsified electronic public records, and obstruction of official duties by fraudulent means. Investigators found no record of any phone call between Bu and Jang after her disappearance. Bu was initially placed under emergency arrest on August 23 but was released following a court order citing the arrest as unlawful. On August 25, the Jeju District Court issued a formal arrest warrant for Bu. In July 2026, while Jang's case remained open, Bu entered a women's restroom at his police station and was removed from duty on August 11. Bu was subsequently investigated on additional charges related to this incident. It was later discovered that Bu had falsely closed at least one additional missing person case and faced charges of admitting to falsifying multiple cases. Four senior officers at Jeju Seobu police station were suspended during an internal investigation. Jang's family expressed serious doubts about the suicide conclusion. Jang had lived on Jeju Island for approximately 10 years. At the time of her disappearance, she was described as having long straight hair, a slim/thin build, and was characterized as having a cute manner of speaking. She was known to wear a gold bracelet. Her phone lost power on May 16, and cell-site records showed no movement associated with her phone after she left the residence. The case sparked national attention regarding police oversight gaps and prompted discussions about investigative authority reforms in South Korea.
