John David Guise Cannan was convicted of the murder of Shirley Banks in Bristol in October 1987, the attempted kidnapping of Julia Holman on the previous night, the rape of a woman in Reading, Berkshire in 1986, the rape of his girlfriend in December 1980, and several other abductions, attempted abductions and sexual offences. He received three life sentences in April 1989 with a minimum tariff of 35 years. Cannan was prime suspect in the unsolved disappearance of estate agent Suzy Lamplugh but was not charged. He remained incarcerated at Full Sutton Prison until his death on November 6, 2024.

Cannan entered a ladies knitwear shop in Sutton Coldfield operated by a 37-year-old woman, pulled a knife, threatened to hurt her 17-month-old son, and demanded money. When her mother entered the shop, Cannan raped the shop assistant in front of her mother and son. The shop owner's husband arrived and Cannan fled out the back.

Only ten weeks after his release from prison, Cannan approached a woman parked under a street lamp reading a book. He opened her car door, held a knife to her, raped her and committed buggery. DNA evidence from semen later linked him to this crime in 1988.

On October 6, 1986, Donna Tucker got into a car on Whiteladies Road to read a book. A man approached and asked for directions, then opened the car door and held a knife to her. He raped her and committed buggery. She reported the incident to police immediately.

Shirley Anne Banks, a 29-year-old factory manager from Bristol, disappeared on October 8, 1987 from Bristol city centre. Cannan abducted her in her white Mini, transported her to his flat (evidenced by her thumbprint on a document found there), and later murdered her by striking her head repeatedly with a rock. Her decomposed body was found on April 3, 1988 in the Quantock Hills near Dead Woman's Ditch in Somerset.

Cannan entered Carmel Cleary's store on October 29, 1987 and pulled a knife on her and another woman. He attempted robbery with intent to abduct and commit sexual assault. He ran out of the store as another man entered to help. Police found the knife and a jacket with blood on it in plastic bags he dropped while fleeing.
