John Reginald Halliday Christie was convicted of the murder of his wife Ethel in 1953 and executed by hanging at Pentonville Prison on July 15, 1953. Christie murdered at least eight people—seven women and one infant daughter—by strangling them in his flat at 10 Rillington Place, Notting Hill, London, between August 1943 and March 1953. Most victims were rendered unconscious with domestic carbon monoxide gas before being raped and strangled. He was also convicted as a serial rapist who committed necrophilia on his victims.

Christie murdered his wife Ethel by rendering her unconscious with domestic gas, then strangling her. He placed her body beneath the floorboards of the front room and told relatives she had gone to Sheffield, forging her handwriting in correspondence. She was 54 years old at the time of her murder.
