Francois pleaded guilty to eight counts of first-degree murder and eight counts of second-degree murder on December 23, 1998, and a plea deal was upheld by the New York State Court of Appeals in March 2000. The guilty plea allowed him to avoid the death penalty. Victims were eight sex workers picked up from downtown Poughkeepsie streets between October 24, 1996, and August 26, 1998. All victims were strangled by manual means. Bodies were hidden in the attic and crawl space of his family home at 99 Fulton Avenue.
