Heidnik signed his girlfriend's cognitively disabled sister, Alberta Davidson, age 34, out of a mental institution on day leave and imprisoned her in his basement for 10 days. She was raped and sodomized. The original sentence was overturned on appeal and Heidnik spent 3 years in mental institutions before release in April 1983.

Josefina Rivera, age 25, a sex worker, was picked up by Heidnik on November 25, 1986 and held captive until March 25, 1987. She was the first victim and became a key witness. She escaped after gaining Heidnik's trust and directed police to his home.

A 24-year-old woman with developmental disabilities, Sandra Lindsay was kidnapped on December 3, 1986. Heidnik suspended her by her wrists from a basement rafter for two days after she attempted to escape. She died from starvation, injury, and fever on February 7, 1987. Heidnik dismembered her body with a power saw, boiled her head, and ground her flesh to feed to other captives.
