This record documents arrests, charges and convictions reported by courts, law enforcement agencies and news organizations. Every statement is tied to a cited source with an archived copy. A charge is an accusation, not proof of guilt; a person charged is presumed innocent unless convicted. Solve the Case does not allege that this person committed any offense beyond what the cited records state, and this record is not a suggestion that the person is connected to any unsolved case. How records are built, corrected and removed.

Summary of the record

Henry Lee Lucas was convicted of murdering his mother Viola in Michigan in 1960 and of homicides of Becky Powell and Kate Rich in Texas in 1983. He was convicted of eleven homicides total and condemned to death for the 1979 murder of an unidentified woman known as 'Orange Socks' (later identified as Debra Jackson), though his death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment in 1998. While incarcerated, Lucas falsely confessed to approximately 600 murders, nearly all of which were later determined to be fabrications. He died of natural causes on March 12, 2001, in Ellis Unit prison in Huntsville, Texas.
