Executed by electrocution on March 23, 1998, at Florida State Prison, Starke, Florida.

This record documents arrests, charges and convictions reported by courts, law enforcement agencies and news organizations. Every statement is tied to a cited source with an archived copy. A charge is an accusation, not proof of guilt; a person charged is presumed innocent unless convicted. Where a record says named by police, no charge was ever filed: the record rests on a law enforcement agency's public identification of the deceased person, cited below. Not guilty by reason of insanity means the court found the act proven but the person not criminally responsible. Solve the Case does not allege that this person committed any offense beyond what the cited records state, and this record is not a suggestion that the person is connected to any unsolved case. How records are built, corrected and removed.

Summary of the record

Eugene Paul Stano was born Paul Zeininger on September 12, 1951, in Schenectady, New York, and was adopted as an infant by Eugene and Norma Stano. He was convicted of nine first-degree murders in Florida between 1973 and 1980, including the murders of Mary Carol Maher, Toni Van Haddocks, Nancy Heard, Susan Bickrest, Mary Kathleen Muldoon, and Cathy Lee Scharf. Stano confessed to 41 murders and was suspected by law enforcement of committing up to 88 murders across Florida, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. He was arrested on April 1, 1980, after attacking a woman in Daytona Beach. He pleaded guilty to multiple murders and was convicted of one murder at trial. Stano received two death sentences and six life sentences. He was executed by electric chair on March 23, 1998, at Florida State Prison.
