Custody record at the facility

Serving two life sentences without possibility of parole plus 408 years (death sentence commuted to life on October 11, 2018, when Washington Supreme Court ruled capital punishment unconstitutional).

This record documents arrests, charges and convictions reported by courts, law enforcement agencies and news organizations. Every statement is tied to a cited source with an archived copy. A charge is an accusation, not proof of guilt; a person charged is presumed innocent unless convicted. Where a record says named by police, no charge was ever filed: the record rests on a law enforcement agency's public identification of the deceased person, cited below. Not guilty by reason of insanity means the court found the act proven but the person not criminally responsible. Solve the Case does not allege that this person committed any offense beyond what the cited records state, and this record is not a suggestion that the person is connected to any unsolved case. How records are built, corrected and removed.

Summary of the record

Robert Lee Yates Jr., born May 27, 1952, in Oak Harbor, Washington, is a convicted serial killer who pleaded guilty to 13 counts of first-degree murder and 1 count of attempted first-degree murder in Spokane County in 2000, and was convicted of 2 counts of aggravated first-degree murder in Pierce County in 2002. Yates admitted to murdering at least 16 people, mostly sex workers, in Washington state between 1975 and 1998 using a .25-caliber handgun. He is currently incarcerated at Washington State Penitentiary serving life without parole after his death sentence was commuted in 2018.

Documented Arrests, Charges and Convictions
