On August 19, 2021, at approximately 10 p.m., Oxnard Police officers responded to the 1500 block of Crawford Street following reports of a shooting victim. Officers found 26-year-old Uriel Barrera in front of a residence suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Barrera received emergency medical care at the scene and was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The shooter fled the scene before police arrived in a white 2000 Chevrolet utility truck bearing California license plate 6L29406 with "Full House Plumbing" in blue lettering on the doors.

On August 23, 2021, the Oxnard Police Department identified Genaro Cortes, 35, of Oxnard as the suspect in Barrera's murder. Police sought public assistance in locating Cortes and warned that he should be considered armed and dangerous. This was the 12th homicide in Oxnard for the year 2021. As of October 2026, Cortes still has an active warrant, according to Ventura County’s court records database.
